An invitation to get cut-to-the-chase,
candid answers to your publishing questions
and get on the road to success in today’s
tough publishing world.

If you’re among the majority of adults who yearn to
write a book — whether you’ve actually started it or not — what
this invitation offers will be of special interest to you...

Dear Reader,

If you’d like to write a book—or if you’ve already written one but are having trouble getting it published—you’ll be very glad you took the time to read this letter.

That’s because what I’m about to share with you may very well be the missing link that takes you from a “wannabe” to a published author by the end of this year!

It’s not that you’re not intelligent enough to figure out how to do it on your own.

It’s just that you can’t find the kind of straightforward, non-sugar-coated information you need to handle the day-to-day ups and downs of trying to fulfill your writing dreams in a book.

Don’t get me wrong. You should read books and magazines, and even take courses about writing. But in addition to those things, you need to get a good sense of what thriving authors, busy editors and in-demand agents are really dealing with every day.

That’s why I’m inviting you to join us for a special teleconference, “Get Published in Today’s Hot Markets: Who the Players Are—and How to Reach Them,” to be held on Thursday, May 11, 2006, at 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time.

This is your chance to get the inside scoop
on whatever is holding you back

Hi there. I’m Denise Ford, Conference & Communications Director for AWAI.

In working with all sorts of writers over the years, I’ve discovered something very important. If you want to increase your chances of writing a compelling book and getting it published, you need to do two things: (1) get insider information and (2) ask questions.

So on May 11th, you’ll have a chance to do both.

You’ll learn the things that editors, publishers, agents, and even other writers won’t normally tell you. And you can ask them the questions you need answered about how first-time writers can pull a good story together, direct it to the right people, and break into the market.

Who’s going to spill the beans? An amazing team of very generous people who love helping new writers succeed:

  • Steve Alten decided to write a novel when a business he owned failed. Working late nights and on weekends, he eventually finished MEG: A Novel of Deep Terror. Steve sold his car to pay for editing fees. On September (Friday) the 13th, 1996, he lost his job at a wholesale meat plant. Four days later, his agent came to him with a two-book, seven-figure deal with Bantam Doubleday. MEG went on to become a New York Times bestseller. In April 2005, Steve sold MEG to New Line Cinema, which will release the movie in the summer 2007. Steve, who has now completed seven novels, is currently writing the screenplay for his fourth novel, The LOCH, which is being packaged by David Foster (The Thing, Collateral Damage, and Mask of Zorro).

  • Linda Conrad has been a dreamer and a storyteller for as long as she can remember. After her mother’s death several years ago, Linda gave up her career as a stockbroker and certified financial planner and rededicated herself to her first love — writing love stories. Now she is a best-selling and award-winning author. She currently has a six-book contract for her Skinwalker series (about the Navajo). Linda’s books have been translated into 20 languages. She loves helping writers learn new skills at workshops and conferences.

  • Michael Ward is an award-winning publishing executive with extensive experience in book and magazine publishing. Among his many credits, Michael was the Editorial Director for Rodale Press, the world’s largest publisher of health and fitness-related books, for two years. His book experience spans from acquisition all the way through design and manufacturing. He has experience with series development, contract negotiations, marketing, public relations, pricing, and strategic planning. Michael is also the author of The New Spirit of Watercolor and the publisher ofMichael Masterson’s latest work, Power and Persuasion.

  • Amy Moore-Benson spent 12 years at Harlequin Enterprises, working most recently as Executive Editor of MIRA Books, the Canadian publishing giant’s mainstream fiction imprint. During her time at MIRA Books, she was responsible for discovering many new literary voices, several of whom (like Alex Kava, Taylor Smith and Elizabeth Flock) went on to become bestsellers. In 2004, Amy decided to switch gears and opened her own literary agency, AMB Literary Management, based in Toronto. At AMB, she works closely with her clients on editorial development and strategy, as well as long-term career management.

Also, Marcia King-Gamble, who is one of Amy Moore-Benson’s clients, will be my co-host on the call. Since 1998, Marcia has been published by Kensington, BET and St. Martin’s Press. She now writes for Harlequin’s Bombshell and African American lines. This summer, Marcia will release Flamingo Place, the first book in a series about Flamingo Beach, a fictitious town in North Florida.

Join Steve, Linda, Michael, Amy, Marcia and me
for this career-launching, secret-revealing discussion
about getting published in today’s markets

What I love about this unique opportunity is that you’ll get straightforward, cut-to-the-chase answers from the people who are in the writing, editing, and publishing mix every day.

They’ll answer the questions we get every day about how to take an idea from your head to the page, what’s really important to include in a query letter, and how to handle rejection without losing momentum.

They’ll also answer the questions that are on your mind.

You’ll discover:

  • What’s hot, such as urban fiction, erotica, the inspirational market, and paranormals... and what’s not.

  • Tried and true plots that sell over and over again, and why your wonderful, innovative plot might not sell.

  • What’s really important in manuscript presentations and book proposals.

  • The appropriate way to contact an editor and agent, and the appropriate time to follow up.

  • The difference between a “good” rejection and a “bad” one.

  • When it’s a good idea to get an agent and when it’s not.

It’s gonna be a lively, no-holds-barred conversation that no aspiring writer should miss!

Unfortunately, there’s only so much information we can fit into a single hour. This brain-picking session will be focused on what it takes to break into the market, but if you’re REALLY serious about becoming a published author, you also need to know about the “technical” aspects of getting published.

So we’ve added a second teleconference and are bringing in even more industry players to help you…

Take control … get your book published and released on your terms!

Unfortunately, most new writers feel the sting of rejection by conventional book publishers. Often times, over and over again.

It can be a tough journey…

You spend months or even years sitting by the phone and checking your mailbox anxiously waiting to hear from publishers—only to get the big brush-off in the end.

Thankfully, conventional publishers are no longer the gatekeepers to the book industry. Today, you have more options… and more control… than ever in getting your book into readers’ hands.

And that will be the subject of our second call, “Beyond Tradition: Hot New Publishing Options in Today’s Market,” which will be held on Thursday, May 25, 2006, at 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time.

Copywriter and author Bob Bly will host the call. He will be joined by a team of people with a wealth of experience in writing and publishing, including:

  • Russell Davis is an author, editor, and part-time agent. In April 2000, a publisher asked Russell to use his knowledge of the industry and his writing contacts to launch a new publishing house called Foggy Windows Books, a multi-genre house that published novels and original anthologies with semi-erotic content for married couples. In September 2001, Russell was hired by Five Star Publishing, where he took over editorial control of the romance and women’s fiction line. Then, in the spring of 2004, Russell launched his own book packaging and editorial services company, Morning Storm Books.

  • Jo Manning is the author of three novels and two anthologies. One of her books, Seducing Mr. Heywood, was named one of the top 10 romances of the year by Booklist in 2002. She is currently working on Courting Chloe Brown, a sequel to Seducing Mr. Heywood. Jo also founded the Reader’s Digest General Books Library, was active in the Special Libraries Association and served as the publishing division president for five years. Jo will speak about her latest work, a biography about regency courtesan, Grace Dalyrymple and why such a biography fascinated her.

  • Margaret Fraser’s writing career began at age 16 when a newspaper hired her to write a controversial opinion column, which she published weekly for two years. She honed her writing skills as a promotion representative for MCA Universal, where she produced a newsletter, coordinated media schedules, and crafted artist bios, marketing plans and advertising copy. Later, Margaret turned her hand to writing romance. She completed two full-length romantic suspense manuscripts that earned numerous contest successes, including: the Orange Rose Award, first place in the Emerald City Opener, and finalist honors in RWA’s prestigious Golden Heart. Today, Margaret freelances as a senior writer and assistant editor for Biography for Everyone, LLC(www.biographyforeveryone.com), having ghostwritten and/or edited 10 books for the company.

  • Gary Scott is an entrepreneur and author of 65th Octave, an economic thriller with a spiritual twist. Gary has written 36 books, reports, and courses on investing and business. Thousands have attended his courses around the world.

This call will answer your burning questions about self-publishing and print on demand, as well as the pros and cons of each option. You’ll also learn about marketing strategies, royalties, and advances for each publishing track—as well as alternative genres you might never have considered.

One more reason to be on this important call…

If you’re itching to write and publish a book, but sometimes lack the drive to see it through, you’ll love our special guest on the second call.

Robert Ringer is a dynamic public speaker who has written three #1 best-selling books—Restoring the American Dream, Looking Out for #1, and To Be Or Not to Be Intimidated? The New York Times has listed the latter two works among the 15 best-selling motivational books of all time.

Millions of people around the world have read Robert’s books, which have been published in many foreign languages. In his latest book—Action! Nothing Happens Until Something Moves—Robert offers profound insights into why action is the key element in determining how your life plays out. So if anyone can inspire and energize you to get your book written and on the market, Robert can!
