Let me explain. Have you ever noticed that you receive certain letters in the mail more than once? When a company mails the same letter over and over that means the letter is making a lot of sales for the company. Those letters are called “controls” and they’re mailed until a new letter outsells it.

As the author of a “control” you get paid for every letter that mails—each time it mails. Depending on the size of the company, a control may mail 1,000,000 to 2,000,000 times a year. If you hold the control for a year, you’ll be paid anywhere from an extra $20,000 to $40,000 for that letter. Some controls last for years – even 10 years!

Three or four controls a year and you can see just how fast the dollars can add up. Here’s a typical “income snapshot” of a person who writes one direct mail letter a month (12 per year) and has three controls.
