It’s so unfair that I feel a bit guilty. Last year, I earned $9,812 per month working part-time from home while my kids were in school.

But don’t get the wrong idea; I’m not a “writer.”

I’ve never been published in any literary magazines. My spelling is so bad, it baffles spell check. Plus, I’ll confess, I use “creative” grammar from time to time. My 7th grade English teacher would be appalled.

You may be thinking that this sounds too good to be true. $5,000 to $10,000 for a single letter? How is that possible?

Well, it’s simple, really. Your letter sells products. Newsletters, vitamins, books, clothes, you name it. Or it raises money for a worthy cause like cancer research, or the environment, or your local homeless shelter.

The letter Linda created for Frances Lear was so successful at getting people to subscribe to the magazine that it mailed for over three years. At its height, the magazine had over 500,000 subscribers. Even at the discounted price of $18 for a one-year subscription, that’s $9 million in sales.

Now, if a letter was bringing in $9 million in sales, don’t you think a magazine would gladly pay you $5,000, $10,000, even $150,000 to write it?

That’s exactly why magazines, catalogs, newsletters, and even charities are willing to pay you more than most doctors earn to write letters like this.

How to Earn $2,160 or $83,223
From a Letter You Wrote Months or Even Years Ago

But it gets even better. Once you know the recipe for writing winning sales letters, you can ask your clients for a royalty. A royalty is simply a percentage of every sale you generate. For example, a 2% royalty would pay you $2 for every $100 product you sold.

One of the first letters I was hired to write paid $4,500 up front. But that one letter generated $216,058 worth of newsletter subscriptions last year. The publisher of the newsletter paid me a royalty of 1% or $2,160. So I earned a total of $6,660 for one letter that took me about 2 weeks to write.

Now, top writers earn much more than that. They can earn as much as $25,000 up front for their letters. When they win the control, meaning their letter is so successful it gets mailed over and over again (like the Lear’s letter I mentioned), they can earn thousands of dollars in royalties.

Some top writers earn royalties as high as 5%. So if their letter generates a million dollars (and believe it or not, many do), then the writer receives an additional $50,000 – without lifting a finger!

Let me give you another example of the kind of money you can make writing letters. One top writer I know, Paul Hollingshead, was paid over $83,223 to write a single letter for a self-help product.

He was paid $7,000 in August of 2004 to write the initial letter, but that was just the beginning. On 12/1/04 he got his first royalty check for $5,993. On 1/3/05, he got another royalty check for $8,000. Through July 2006, he received 6 more royalty checks totaling $62,230. And the checks are still rolling in! All for a letter he wrote in 2004.

Why You’ll Never Be Out of Work Again

With the great money you can earn from writing letters, you would think the market would be flooded with aspiring writers. But here’s the surprising thing. Even with the huge paychecks available, there simply aren’t enough writers to keep up with the work load.

Don’t believe me? The next time you pick up your mail, I want you to conduct a little experiment. Make a pile of all the mail in your mailbox. Be sure to include offers for credit cards, magazine subscriptions, and vacation packages. Don’t forget catalogs, requests for political donations, and pleas from your favorite charity.

Next I want you to go online and check your email. Print out every email offer in your inbox, including an invitation to join Netflix, a coupon from J.Jill, or an email from Amazon telling you there’s a great new book or CD that you might like…

Then I want you to think about the last time you purchased something online and go back to that website. Scroll through the pages, read the descriptions.

Now look at that mountain of words. Every single one of those offers, catalog descriptions, and web pages was written by a writer just like me.

People who write these kinds of letters are called “copywriters.” But it has nothing to do with copyright laws… “Copywriter” simply means a writer who creates sales “copy.” It’s a huge industry, yet almost no one knows about it.

All those catalogs and letters you find in your mailbox… the swimsuit catalog from Lands End… the latest review from Book of the Month Club… and the invitation to join Cooking Light… are all sent to you by direct-marketing companies.

Direct-marketing companies simply skip the middleman and sell directly to you, usually through the mail. Direct marketers will spend around $172.5 billion in 2007 marketing their products, including hiring copywriters, according to the 2006 Direct Marketing Association Report.
